Cinque Terre | Cinque Terre shore excursion from Livorno |
|
Cinque Terre (The Five Lands) is a short piece of coastline just outside of the border of Tuscany at the beginning of the Italian Riviera where five mediaeval fisherman villages survived intact to the centuries isolated as if they were on an island as they could only be reached by sea. They feature such a unique architecture and unbelievable landscapes around them, which justifies leaving Tuscany on a shore excursion when your ship calls in Livorno. This is unquestionably one of the most beautiful spots in Italy and a top priority to visit. As we approach Cinque Terre we will drive through La Spezia and start climbing the promontory that separate this large city from this this magical territory that Cinque Terre is. The scenery from above Riomaggiore (1st town) is breathtaking. Once parked at the top of the village we will start winding down walking through its houses which cluster both sides of the steep valley. The constructions in each town of Cinque Terre seem so daring that one often wonders how can these mediaeval buildings have survived the centuries despite their extremely unstable location. The walk down will end at the ancient marina, that is still intact as it was about 1000 years ago is one of the most attracive corners of Cinque Terre. We will head onto the famous "Via dell'Amore" (Walkway of Love) a romantic, easy and flat trail carved along the cliffs that offers spectacular views over the coastline, and connects Riomaggiore to Manarola (2nd town). At each step the scenery, the rock formations, the vegetation and colors change completely. Manarola is possibly the most photogenic of the five town, it’s composed by an myriad of alleys which go all around it and walking along toward the point of the promontory will allow you to have the most breathtaking view of it. The visit will continue using either a local train or ferry which ride along the Cinque Terre coastline that in about 10 minutes will easily transport us to Vernazza (4th town) the most picturesque of the five. Lunch is at leisure while your tour guide or chauffuer will drive to meet pick you up, one can enjoy fresh fish and possibly "trofie al pesto alla genovese" that in reality is a recepie originary of Cinque Terre!. Driving out of Cinque Terre is a fantastic moment as the road is one of the most breathtaking and scenic, no doubt this is the most scenic ride you may do in any IItaly Shore Excursion especially when we will reach Corniglia (3rd town) the only one of the Cinque terre that is not directly on the water, this is the most ancient and most quaint. On the way back coasting along mountains and cutting through the terraces will give you unforgettable memories of this Shore Excursion to Cinque Terre. Tour Photos: Tour Map: Enlarge Map 2010 Rates
Routes and LogisticsReaching Cinque Terre from Livorno takes about 1hr 15'. Ideally we will park the vehicle in Riomaggiore, from the parking to the heart of the town it's a 10 minutes walk downhill. From the marina we will have to walk back up the equivalent of about 50 steps to reach the walk of love, the most famous train in Cinque Terre, that is about 800 meters long (1/2 a mile) it's wide, has a handrail and it is 100% safe. There is an ammission fee of Euro 5 per person to be paid by clients, which finances the Cinque Terre state park authority. The Via dell'Amore ends at the train station of Manarola those that got tired of walking, can wait for the train there to continue on to Vernazza. In order to take the ferry there is another 5 minutes walking time well worth it, since riding on the train offers very little views, as it's primarily in tunnels, while the ferry ride is very scenic way to enjoy the Cinque Terre coastline. Whether using the ferry or the train the tour guide will normally let clients get from this point by themselves, explaining clients hot to meet him again and will get back to Riomaggiore to take the vehicle and drive to Vernazza to pick up the clients. In the meanwhile clients can enjoy some time at leisure and lunch.
